5 Speed Dating Questions That Actually Tell You Something
By Eryn | Meet Cute Club
Someone asked on Threads recently what to ask at a speed dating event, and it's one of the better questions I get because most people walk into speed dating with three to five minutes and spend all of it on "so what do you do?"
That's not enough time for small talk. Here are five questions that actually tell you something, fast.
1. What's something you've changed your mind about recently?
This shows you how someone thinks, not just what they think. Anyone can list opinions. Someone who can point to a time they updated their mind is showing you they're capable of growth and self-reflection in about 10 seconds.
2. What does a good weekend look like for you?
A real lifestyle check, dressed up as a casual question. The answer tells you about energy level, social needs and what they actually value when no one's watching. This is far more useful than "what do you do for work."
3. What's the most spontaneous thing you've done this year?
This tells you their actual relationship to routine versus risk. Someone who can't think of anything isn't necessarily boring, but it tells you something about how they approach life that a resume never will.
4. What are you looking for right now — and what are you done with?
This cuts straight past the small talk, and most people appreciate the directness more than they expect to. In a format built for efficiency, this question does more work in one sentence than five minutes of résumé-swapping.
5. What's a deal-breaker you learned the hard way?
Specific, a little vulnerable and immediately clarifying. It also tends to get an honest answer because nobody tells that story unless it's true.
You don't need more time at a speed dating event. You need better questions. 🩷
If you'd rather skip the guesswork altogether and have someone else do the vetting, that's what Meet Cute Club is for.
